Dear Northlanders,

This week marks the beginning of the 2026 legislative session at the Minnesota State Capitol. As I entered the chamber, I was reminded of the deep responsibility that comes with serving our district and our state. You work hard every day in your jobs, families, and communities, and you deserve the same dedication and commitment from those you send to St. Paul. I carry that responsibility with me as we begin the work ahead.

The first day of session was unlike any other. The House and Senate gathered to honor the life and legacy of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog, who were tragically assassinated last June in a horrific event that shook our entire state. The loss was deeply felt across Minnesota, and it was important for the legislative body, staff, and guests to pause and remember a woman who devoted 20 years of her life to public service.

During the memorial, colleagues and loved ones shared stories that brought both tears and laughter. Speakers reflected on Melissa and Mark as devoted spouses and parents, and on the many ways they inspired others through the lives they lived. It was a reminder that beyond the titles and responsibilities of public office, we are all people first…parents, spouses, friends, and neighbors.

After the ceremony, I joined my colleagues in placing a rose on the desk where Melissa once sat in the House chamber. Walking out of the chamber, emotions were heavy as members from both sides of the aisle embraced and comforted one another. In that moment, party labels faded and humanity took center stage.

I spoke with a colleague who is preparing to become a new mother, and we reflected on the grace and strength shown by the Hortman children during this unimaginable time. As parents, we all hope our children grow into kind and resilient adults who can navigate life’s ups and downs. Melissa and Mark’s greatest accomplishment was the legacy they leave behind in their children. Their love, character, and values will continue to live on through them.

Each member of the Legislature was given a packet of sunflower seeds to plant in Melissa’s honor. I look forward to planting mine this spring as a small but meaningful reminder of her service and memory. While Melissa and I did not always agree politically, she consistently treated others with class and respect. She believed deeply in the institution and in the importance of serving Minnesotans with integrity.

Now, the work of the session begins. It is not about the 134 individual members of the House. It is about the 5.7 million Minnesotans we represent. As we move forward, I hope we carry Melissa’s spirit with us, building bridges, finding common ground, and working together where we can for the good of our state.
